Kiftsgate Court

Banks and Middle Banks

As you descend the path a hedge of Ilex x altaclarensis 'Golden King' has been planted to act as a wind break and to lighten the sombreness beneath the radiata pines.

The steep zig-zag steps join you further along the path. These steps were made by placing the bottom part of staddle stones end to end. The round tops are used as paving stones in many parts of this lower garden. I feel with the price they realise today it is like walking on a gold mine! After the long dry summers of the mid-nineties, these banks looked a sad sight and so we have started to re-terrace these banks. Fresh topsoil has been brought in to replace what has washed away over the years. The pines still shade this area, but drought-tolerant plants such as cistus, ceanothus and rosemary seem to succeed.
